A New Clock Starts For Tobacco Retailers After A Council Vote In Mill Valley
The approved rule covered in-person and delivery sales, with implementation set for early 2027. The City of Mill Valley has voted to implement an ordinance that does not prohibit individuals from possessing or using tobacco products and exempts FDA-authorized nicotine-cessation products sold for that purpose. The measure was supported by Vice Mayor Caroline Joachim and supported efforts to protect young people, reduce nicotine addiction, and address environmental impacts of tobacco product waste. However, opposition from the California Fuels and Convenience Alliance argued that a ban could shift purchases outside the city and harm small retailers. The council adopted the ordinance by title and waived the second reading. Mayor Max Perrey encouraged other communities to follow the lead.
