Trump administration launches new probe of S.F. schools' ethnic studies curriculum
The investigation will take specific aim at an activity within the ethnic studies curriculum called "The Wheel of Power." The Trump Administration has launched a new investigation into San Francisco school leaders, focusing on the district's ethnic studies curriculum. The Department of Education will investigate whether San Francisco, North Monterey County and Palo Alto unified school districts violated federal law by failing to obtain parent consent for sensitive student surveys about their families and themselves, including income, sexuality and race. The investigation will focus on an activity within the curriculum called "The Wheel of Power," which critics allege requires students to separate themselves by race, income, and other categories aligned with privilege. If true, these districts may also violate a stricter California law, which requires schools to notify parents for "any tests, questionnaires, surveys, or examinations" that asks about student or parent beliefs or practices. This is the latest federal challenge to San Francisco Unified's policies and practices.
