San José Launches Its Automated Speed Cameras. Here’s Where They’ll Be

The city has started to install cameras at 33 locations, including some of the most dangerous corridors. San José, California, has launched its automated speed safety camera program in an effort to curb the city's most deadly driving behavior. The cameras will be located at 33 locations throughout the city, with two at each site. Beginning Dec. 14, they will issue warnings to vehicles traveling 11 mph or more over the speed limit, with higher penalties for greater speeds. Each vehicle will receive one courtesy warning for its first violation. The program will cost between $15.4 million and $17.9 million to install, operate and maintain over the five-year pilot period. So far, San José has recorded 41 traffic-related deaths this year, down from a high of 65 in 2022.
