After 100 Years, A Long Lost Animal Has Returned To The SMC Coast

A wildlife camera captured the animal, offering a surprising sign of recovery for a species once widespread along the California coast. A wildlife camera has captured a North American river otter at a protected preserve on the San Mateo Coast, marking the first documented sighting of the species since the 1800s. The discovery was made by independent researcher Ken Hickman at Cloverdale Ranch Open Space Preserve, a closed area managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. This discovery surprised researchers as river otters have not been documented along the coast there for over a century. The sighting indicates a recovery in protected landscapes that support coho salmon and steelhead trout, and may also indicate improving habitat conditions. The River Otter Ecology Project encourages public to report river otster sightings through its Otter Spotter community science program.
