Anthropic’s massive IPO is coming. But its impact on S.F. may already be here
Anthropic’s massive stock market debut could lead to massive, concentrated wealth in San Francisco, but a lesser impact on the local economy. Anthropic's IPO is set to take place in San Francisco, where the city is prohibited from levying income taxes, so it will not receive any direct tax revenue from the IPO. However, California could see billions in tax revenue as Anthropic employees and investors sell stock, though state officials haven't estimated an exact figure. The company's largest shareholders, Dario and Daniella Amodei, can only sell 29% of their holdings after 180 days or two full trading days after the company’s first quarter of 2027 earnings report, and remaining shares can't be sold until a full year after the IPO prospectus or two more trading days following the company's third quarter of 2022. This could exacerbate the city's wealth gap as a relatively small group of people with valuable tech shares can compete for scarce homes in desirable areas, while those without stock wealth face higher prices and rents.
