OPINION: The recent San Francisco blackout is the latest example of why PG&E’s monopoly needs to be broken up. San Francisco's power outage before Christmas was the first since I moved to the US five years ago, and this incident was my first since moving to the U.S. as a child. The power failed at noon on Dec. 20, leaving power restored for most, but not all, households without food, water, electricity, and elderly and disabled residents. The author reflects on the company's monopoly over the electric distribution grid, which controls about 75% of the city's electricity supply. PG&E’s monopoly status has created systemic risks and has led to increased rate hikes in the energy landscape and risk of environmental issues. The company has reported profits of $2.47 billion in 2024, breaking records for a second consecutive year. State Sen. Scott Wiener declared last week that PG&Es' monopoly returns were guaranteed.
