3-time breast cancer survivor from Daly City turns 39-year fight into mission to help others

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and CBS News Bay Area is highlighting a three-time breast cancer survivor who is now giving back to the community. Asuncion Balon, a three-time breast cancer survivor, has turned her 39-year battle against the disease into a mission to raise awareness and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. She is a Rich to Recovery volunteer, where she helps raise awareness, connect with those with breast cancer, and also helps with fundraising for cancer research. Balon's fight for good health is partly due to her lifelong career as a nurse and support from the American cancer Society. The American Cancer society's associate director of market events, Olivia Catanio, emphasized the need for year-round efforts to reduce the number of breast cancer diagnoses and provide a better life for those who have experienced breast cancer. Balons hopes to share her message that breast cancer is not a life sentence and that positive thinking helps her survive.
