Oakland 911 Outage: Calls Rerouted to Alameda County Sheriff

Oakland's 911 system is down — the Alameda County Sheriff is answering calls instead. Oakland police's phone, internet and computer-aided dispatch systems have been down since Wednesday night, forcing 911 calls to be routed through the Alameda County Sheriff's dispatch center and the city's own fire dispatch. Dispatchers are responding only to Priority 1 calls while the system freezes. The Alameda county Sheriff is answering 911 calls and relaying them to Oakland fire dispatch, a temporary solution. This isn't the first time Oakland has relied on Alameda to keep emergency calls flowing. The outage follows years of strain on the city’s 911 system, which has seen insufficient staffing, mandatory overtime, and a slow hiring process. The California Office of Emergency Services has increased monitoring of the call center after the city missed its deadline to fix the problem.
