A passenger on a Fiji Airways flight bound for San Francisco died over the weekend.

A 41-year-old male U.S. citizen experienced a medical condition approximately an hour and a half before Flight FJ870 from Nadi was scheduled to arrive at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday, according to a statement from Fiji Airways.

“Despite the best efforts of our cabin crew and a doctor on board who provided immediate assistance, the passenger unfortunately passed away,” the airline said.

The aircraft landed safely in San Francisco at approximately 2:34 p.m. after the crew declared a medical emergency and received priority landing from authorities at SFO. Fiji Airways ground operations and local authorities met the plane upon arrival.

“We commend our cabin crew and the assisting doctor for their swift and professional response to this emergency,” the statement continued.

The airline extended its condolences to the deceased passenger’s friends and family.
