The San Mateo County Harbor District partnered with San Mateos County Environmental Health Services to organize an appointment-only collection of discarded marine flares. California has no permitted facilities for accepting these flares, so the Harbor District funded a contractor to transport them to an approved out-of-state disposal facility. The Division of Boating and Waterways issued a statement about the operation.
