Michelin-starred SF restaurant named one of the best in the US

Mister Jiu’s in SF adds another accolade to its Michelin star and chef-owner Brandon Jew’s 2022 James Beard award for Best Chef California. Food & Wine magazine has named the winners of its Global Tastemakers awards, with only one San Francisco restaurant named as one of the 20 best restaurants in America. Mister Jiu's, a one-Michelin-star restaurant in San Francisco’s Chinatown, ranked 18th among the top 20. The restaurant, owned by Brandon Jew, also won a James Beard award for Best Chef California in 2022. Despite not being named a top-10 dining city by Food & Wine, San Francisco was praised for its bakeries. The winners were nominated by 180 travel and food journalists and ranked by an expert panel of judges.

Food & Wine magazine announced the winners of its Global Tastemakers awards, and only one San Francisco restaurant made the cut. However, the city was lauded for its bakeries.

Mister Jiu’s, a one-Michelin-star restaurant in San Francisco’s Chinatown, ranked 18th among the 20 best restaurants in America, according to a news release. Chef-owner Brandon Jew, a born-and-bred San Franciscan, also won a James Beard award back in 2022 for Best Chef California. Last year, the New York Times included Mister Jiu’s on its list of the best restaurants in San Francisco.

The contemporary Cantonese restaurant offers a $75 tasting menu with items such as chicken, shrimp and pig trotter dumplings with preserved yuzu and black truffle, as well as fresh tuna with beets, blood orange and lanzhou chili, along with the famous “Peking style” whole duck, which is smoked with tea leaves. The approachable bar menu serves traditional dishes such as cheong fun noodles, fried rice and scallion milk bread.

The Global Tastemakers winners — or the “best culinary experiences” in the country — were nominated by 180 travel and food journalists and then ranked by an “expert panel of judges.” The best restaurant in the U.S. winner was family-owned Sherman Oaks Thai restaurant Anajak Thai. The only other California restaurant was Damian in Los Angeles. San Francisco was not named a top-10 dining city by Food & Wine; Los Angeles was ranked the fifth-best dining destination in the country, while New York City was No. 1.

However, San Francisco was named the second-best destination for bakeries in America, after New York and just in front of Los Angeles. Food & Wine specifically highlighted Loquat, a Hayes Valley bakery known for bourekas, babkas and other items from across the Jewish diaspora. Hannah Ziskin, former pastry chef at Tartine and Chez Panisse, was also mentioned for her “slabs” of cake at Quarter Sheets Pizza in Los Angeles.
