Niners Wire mock draft 4.0: 49ers make last-second desperation move up in 1st round

The mock draft saw Minnesota receive No. 3 overall (2024) and New England drop down to find players who can help them this season. The Chargers chose not to add a top wide receiver, but instead to trade back into a range where they can still find offensive line help or an offensive playmaker. The Broncos chose a quarterback named Daniels, who has a high ceiling and is expected to be great, but needs to be given more time to develop.

This time we put the simulator away and tried on 32 general manager hats to see how they fit and what kind of mock went with it. It turns out being an NFL GM leads to a lot of tough decisions.

TRADE

MIN receives: No. 3 overall (2024)

NE receives: Nos. 11 and 23 overall (2024), 1st-round pick (2025) Instead of going after their QB here, New England takes the full rebuild route and snags future draft capital to fall back into a range where they can still find a couple players who can help them this season. There’s enough smoke around McCarthy being a coveted NFL talent to believe a QB-needy team like Minnesota will jump up to get him. If he can give head coach Kevin O’Connell some facsimile of what he got from Kirk Cousins it would be worth moving up instead of waiting and hoping for a QB. to fall to them.

TRADE

DEN receives: No. 5 overall (2024)

LAC receives: Nos. 12 and 121 overall (2024), 2025 1st-round pick The Chargers forego adding a top wide receiver, and instead trade back into a range where they can still find offensive line help or the offensive playmaker they desperately need. This is an easy choice for Denver. They need a quarterback and Daniels is a tremendous prospect. He might need a little time to develop, but his ceiling is extremely high. The Broncos just need to ensure he’s given the runway to be great.
