ORLANDO, Fla. – New assistant head coach Brandon Staley has made an impact on the 49ers’ 2024 plan in just one month.
Coach Kyle Shanahan talked about how valuable Staley has been since arriving in the Bay earlier in March during the NFL Annual Meeting on Tuesday.
“Brandon has a lot of knowledge as a coordinator in this league and in recent years as a head coach,” Shanahan said. “He knows a lot of the staff and is very involved in the concept work. It’s always nice to have someone with his expertise on board to help us.”
Staley, who went 24-24 as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021 to 2023, provided valuable free agency input, including insight on edge rusher Leonard Floyd, who the 49ers signed to a two-year, $20 million contract. Staley coached Floyd in 2020 when he was the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams.
“It was really cool to have Brandon on our staff,” Shanahan said. “He has to start coaching [Floyd] in LA, and when I hear what a practice player he is, he goes all day long, loves to play football, and I’m happy to have him on our team.”
Staley’s background made him a candidate for the 49ers defensive coordinator vacancy after Steve Wilks was fired, but Shanahan and general manager John Lynch decided to promote internal candidate Nick Sorensen. However, they added Staley as assistant head coach at the same time, and Shanahan explained Tuesday how the roles will be different.
“Nick is going to recite the plays,” Shanahan said. “Nick will be a big part of the game planning and doing everything on that side of the ball, as well as helping me in other areas. Brandon will be a big part of the game plans and implementing a big part of our defense here in the game. off-season and during each week to prepare for teams.”
“He’s already played a big role in free agency,” Shanahan said. “He helped us with the draft and he will be a huge asset to the entire coaching staff. Once we start practicing and going through OTAs, we just have the expertise of someone else, who has a lot of ball knowledge, he’s run some schemes.
As for Shanahan, the more input the better, and he has hired several experienced coaches and coordinators to help him with game planning and ideas. For example, Anthony Lynn, who succeeded Staley as head coach of the Chargers (2017-2020), is the 49ers’ game coordinator.
Staley, who also served as outside linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears (2017-18) and Denver Broncos (2019), will similarly have another set of eyes on the defense.
