In those 10 years, the Warriors won four NBA championships, made two more NBA Finals appearances, and set the record for regular-season wins with 73.
Golden State had a dynasty by any definition of the word.
But now it may be over.
The Warriors won just 44 games in 2022-23. They struggled with injuries throughout the year and were bounced from the NBA playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round.
Steph Curry and Klay Thompson are aging. Draymond Green could leave in free agency, and general manager Bob Myers recently walked away from the team.
All the signs appear to signal that the end is near for Golden State.
But where did things go wrong? Why did this year’s team come up so short?
Well, head coach Steve Kerr gave a pretty good explanation during a recent appearance on The Draymond Green Show.
Kerr, when discussing the Miami Heat’s win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, talked about the chemistry needed to win a championship.
“None of those guys on Miami are sitting there saying ‘well, I didn’t play’ or ‘man, they put in so and so.’ They’re just all about winning,” he said. “And you know this from our groups that we’ve had, when you have that championship mentality, every guy’s bought in. Every guy’s just trying to win. Nobody cares about any of that stuff. You don’t go into the locker room saying ‘well, I should’ve played more.’ You just want to win.
“And that’s the beauty of finding that magic when you have a championship team, is that everybody’s bought in and it makes the decisions for the coach really simple. You just go with your gut and go with whoever’s playing well.”
Many fans took this as Kerr calling out the Warriors’ younger players.
Regardless of the cause, Golden State is running out of time to get things sorted out.
