The Castro Theatre sign will be illuminated next week to kick off the 48th San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival.
The historic movie palace’s blade, under wraps for most of the year, will be revealed during a Juneteenth celebration and documentary screening about “Old Town Road” rapper Lil Nas X, confirmed David Perry, spokesperson for Another Planet Entertainment, the Bay Area live events company overseeing the major renovation of the 102-year-old Spanish Baroque theater.
“Kicking off the festival by honoring Blackness and queerness on Juneteenth reinforces Frameline’s mission of putting the LGBTQ+ community’s essential stories front and center,” said Allegra Madsen, executive director of the nonprofit organization, in a statement.
Free and open to the public, the evening is expected to feature San Francisco Drag Laureate D’Arcy Drollinger and include a variety of live performances. Among the acts scheduled to appear are Drag Queen of the Year pageant winner Nicki Jizz, local drag queens Afrika America and Mudd the Two Spirit, the San Francisco Pride Band and DJ Die Wies.
“Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” will be shown on large screens outside the Castro Theatre at 8:20 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
With the festival’s usual headquarters undergoing renovation, Frameline 48 will be hosted at the Roxie Theater, the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, the Herbst Theatre, the Vogue Theater and the New Parkway Theater in Oakland from June 19-29.
“The Castro Theatre is Frameline’s ‘Forever Home,’ and we are proud to partner with Frameline in this significant celebration,” said Gregg Perloff, CEO of Another Planet Entertainment, in a statement. “The re-lighting of the neon blade sign is a testament to our collective efforts to honor and revitalize this iconic landmark, literally a symbol of welcome to the LGBTQ+ community recognized internationally.”
In February, the Castro Theatre was shuttered for the yearlong $15 million project that includes updating the building’s systems and restoring parts of the interior. Another Planet Entertainment also proposed the removal of the fixed orchestra seating, which was approved by the city in June 2023.
